Family Financial Fitness

The Asset Building Programs Department of Mount Hope Housing Company, Inc., is constantly seeking new ways to expand its outreach in the community, specifically Bronx Community Districts Four and Five. To this end, Asset Building Programs inaugurated its newest initiative, the Family Financial Fitness program in fall 2005. Family Financial Fitness (FFF) will strengthen the economic and relationship stability of participating families by enhancing their financial and communication skills through cooperative learning in the areas of money management, goal-setting, and decision-making.

FFF flow chart

Ongoing research by Asset Building Programs staff has revealed the link between financial strain and family turmoil, specifically in low income families. The FFF program is built on the assumption that families who act as an efficient economic unit are more likely to have better relationships and contribute to the community. Therefore, the program seeks to integrate elements of relationship skills and financial education for all ages within the family. The end goal is families whose stress level have been reduced through economic empowerment and strengthened relationships. Children who are exposed to the concepts of money management at an early age are more likely to make economically effective decisions as they grow. Parents who are able to share financial goals with their children will be able to set economic boundaries for the whole family in a more effective way. Healthy families create a solid foundation for healthy communities.
